Crunches with Leg Raises

Crunches with leg raises are another variation of regular crunches. Begin by lying on the mat with one leg bent and the other extended. Raise your shoulders off the mat and crunch upwards while simultaneously raising your leg up as high as possible.

Keep your leg straight as you raise it upwards while performing a crunch. The idea is for your leg and upper body to meet at the top of the movement. By raising your leg up as demonstrated, this movement places a slight amount of effort onto the lower abs in addition to working the upper abs. To balance the work on your abdominals, alternate which leg you raise on each set. Still, by raising only one leg at a time like this the lower abs are not worked very intensely and you should keep in mind that this exercise is predominantly a movement for the upper abs.Difficulty Rating: 1

Alternatively, you can perform the movement by bending your leg as you raise it upwards. This is an easier variation to perform if you have limited flexibility in your legs.Difficulty Rating: 1
