Lat Pulldowns

To perform lat pulldowns, start by facing the machine and grabbing the bar with a wide overhand grip. If you are at a machine that has pads for the legs, position your legs under these pads to hold yourself in place as you perform this exercise. Hold your chest out while arching your lower back as you pull the bar down.

Pull the bar towards your chest and squeeze your back at the end of the movement, then return to the starting position slowly and under control.

Tips

* This is a great exercise for working the lats. This movement mainly targets the upper and central areas of the latissimus dorsi as well as the lower part of the trapezius, the rhomboids, and the biceps.
* Some machines are equipped with straight bars or bars with handles that allow the palms to face each other. The type of bar you use does not really matter; what matters is that you position your hands fairly wide apart so that you can work your back from the best angle.
