Upright Rows

To perform upright rows, start by grabbing a barbell with an overhand grip with your hands positioned fairly close together. Hold your back straight and keep a slight bend in your knees as you perform this exercise. Pull the barbell up as high as possible while keeping your elbows pointing outwards.

Continue raising the bar towards your chin. The higher you raise the bar, the more you will feel your trapezius contract. This movement requires a certain amount of flexibility in the shoulder joints, however, so you should only raise the bar as high as your flexibility permits.

Tips

* This is a good exercise for developing the upper part of the trapezius. The deltoid, biceps, and forearm muscles are all used in the movement as well.
* A narrow grip on the bar will focus the majority of the effort onto the trapezius. Conversely, a wider grip will recruit the shoulder muscles more.
